Satya as Accurate Observation

Satya, the second yama or ethical restraint, means truthfulness—not merely honesty in speech but alignment between perception, understanding, and communication. For Patanjali, satya was foundational to reliable knowledge: deception corrupts observation, rationalizations obscure reality, and lack of integrity undermines investigation. This connects to modern science's crisis of replication and false findings: pressure to publish, confirmation bias, selective reporting, and ego investment in being right all violate satya. Indigenous knowledge systems emphasize accountability to community and land: knowledge claims must withstand scrutiny and prove reliable over time. This is satya operating at community level: truth that works, that serves, that aligns with observable reality. Western science theoretically embraces satya through peer review and reproducibility but often fails practically due to institutional pressures and human bias. This concept proposes that satya represents sophisticated epistemology: ethical commitment to accurate observation. By integrating yogic satya principles into scientific practice, we strengthen integrity: rigorous acknowledgment of limitations, honest reporting of uncertainty, transparency about funding and bias, accountability to affected communities. Both traditions recognize that knowledge depends on truthfulness at every level. The dialogue helps science reclaim its ethical foundations and shows Indigenous ethics as rigorous epistemology, not mere virtue.
