Niyama, the second limb of Patanjali's path, comprises five positive observances: purity (saucha), contentment (santosha), discipline (tapas), self-study (svadhyaya), and surrender to the larger whole (ishvara pranidhana). Where yama addresses what to restrain, niyama addresses what to actively cultivate. In political psychology, niyama represents the inner work that enables authentic public service. Political leaders often enter public life with genuine idealism but lack the inner discipline to sustain it against the pressures, temptations, and corruptions of power. Niyama provides a practical framework for this cultivation. Saucha requires physical and mental cleanliness—freedom from addictions, clarity of thought. Santosha means contentment with simple living, freeing leaders from the desperation that leads to corruption. Tapas is the disciplined effort required to maintain integrity despite opposition. Svadhyaya is continuous self-examination and learning about one's patterns and limitations. Ishvara pranidhana is alignment with principles larger than ego. Political movements that cultivate niyama in their leaders produce fundamentally different quality of public service. This framework transforms political leadership from personality-based heroics to the serious inner work of becoming a vessel for collective wellbeing rather than personal aggrandizement.
