Why It Matters

Dhyana, continuous and unbroken attention, represents the deepening of concentration practice toward transformative states of awareness. In DBT for emotional dysregulation, attentional capacity is foundational—clients must develop the ability to notice emotional triggers, maintain focus on skills in moments of high arousal, and sustain awareness through distress without becoming consumed by emotion. Patanjali taught that the untrained mind naturally scatters toward whatever triggers reactivity, making it impossible to apply wisdom in difficult moments. Dysregulated individuals often experience this scattering as racing thoughts, impulsive behavior, or dissociative fragmentation. Dhyana practice develops the neural substrate for sustained self-observation and skillful response. DBT's mindfulness training explicitly builds this capacity through exercises in present-moment awareness and non-judgmental observation. By cultivating dhyana through meditation, individuals strengthen their ability to remain present during emotional storms rather than being swept away by reactivity. This sustained attentional capacity transforms DBT skills from intellectual knowledge to embodied capacity—enabling real-time application when emotional dysregulation most threatens to derail functioning.
