The yogic practice of rigorous self-study that enables dyslexic and ADHD individuals to understand their unique learning patterns, strengths, and optimal conditions.
Svadhyaya—self-study or self-inquiry—is a core yogic practice of examining one's own nature, patterns, and capacities. For neurodivergent learners, svadhyaya is transformative. Many dyslexic and ADHD individuals have received external labels and diagnoses but lack deep self-knowledge of how their minds actually work. Svadhyaya invites deliberate inquiry: When do I focus best? What sensory conditions support my learning? How does my thinking process differ from my peers'? What are my actual strengths? A dyslexic individual practicing svadhyaya might discover they learn visually and kinesthetically, excel at pattern recognition, and need specific decoding structures. An ADHD person might recognize their hyperfocus patterns, their need for novelty and movement, their capacity for creative problem-solving. This self-knowledge is power. It enables individuals to advocate for appropriate accommodations, design personalized learning systems, and leverage strengths. Svadhyaya also means studying neuroscience, learning theory, and other neurodivergent people's experiences. Through rigorous self-study combined with external learning, neurodivergent individuals become experts in themselves rather than passive recipients of expert judgments.
