Svadhyaya: Self-Study Through Questions

The deliberate practice of self-inquiry and studying one's own nature as the primary field of curious investigation.

Why It Matters

Svadhyaya, self-study, is one of Patanjali's three pillars of transformation (alongside tapas and ishvara-pranidhana). While external curiosity explores the world, svadhyaya directs inquiry inward toward your own nature, patterns, and assumptions. This practice recognizes that genuine understanding begins with self-knowledge: understanding why you believe what you believe, how your conditioning shapes perception, and which questions emerge from authentic wondering versus fear or desire. For curiosity as a way of life, svadhyaya means asking: How do my assumptions filter what I learn? What patterns repeat in my inquiry? What questions do I avoid? By applying curiosity to yourself systematically, you refine the instrument of understanding itself. This metacognitive awareness prevents you from being unconsciously shaped by your own blind spots. Svadhyaya transforms curiosity from mere information-gathering into genuine self-knowledge and wisdom.
