Tapas, often translated as "heat" or "austerity," refers to the intensity of effort and the productive friction generated by disciplined practice. In habit formation, tapas is the willingness to sit with discomfort as you change ingrained patterns. When you stop a habitual behavior, you often experience withdrawal—physical restlessness, emotional irritability, or mental agitation. Rather than viewing this as failure, tapas teaches you to recognize it as the heat necessary for transformation. This heat is actually evidence that change is occurring at the neural level. Tapas requires patience because you must maintain discipline through the uncomfortable period when the new habit doesn't yet feel natural but the old habit triggers still arise.
