Tapas, often translated as "heat" or "discipline," refers to the intensive effort and friction generated through sustained practice. This principle acknowledges that real psychological transformation isn't comfortable; it requires working at the edge of resistance. CBT explicitly embraces tapas through its insistence on behavioral experiments, exposure to feared situations, and cognitive challenging even when uncomfortable. Facing a social anxiety trigger, practicing assertiveness despite discomfort, or sitting with uncertainty without reassurance-seeking—these generate psychological heat. Patanjali's framework validates this discomfort as necessary, not pathological: the heat of tapas burns away old patterns and creates space for new neural pathways. Many clients want relief without effort, but CBT and Patanjali both teach that sustainable change requires willingness to experience productive discomfort. This reframes therapy challenges not as failures but as evidence of genuine work.
