For trauma survivors, activation energy becomes trapped in the nervous system as chronic tension, hyperarousal, and somatic dysregulation. Tapas offers a metaphorical and practical approach to metabolizing this stuck energy through intentional practice. Rather than dissociating from or avoiding the activation, survivors engage it through movement, breathing, and sustained attention. This creates manageable intensity—a container for processing the unprocessed activation. Pranayama practices like bhastrika (bellows breath) or vigorous asana sequences literally generate heat that helps metabolize stored trauma. The controlled intensity of tapas teaches survivors that they can generate, sustain, and eventually release intense energy without being destroyed by it, gradually restoring their capacity for activation without dysregulation.
