Vairagya: Detachment from Limiting Beliefs

The practice of releasing attachment to beliefs that no longer serve us, creating space for new understanding to emerge.

Why It Matters

Vairagya—non-attachment or dispassion—is the complementary practice to abhyasa in Patanjali's system. While abhyasa builds positive patterns, vairagya releases grip on outdated or harmful beliefs. Many people intellectually know a belief is false but cannot release it because they are emotionally attached to its familiarity or the identity it provides. Vairagya teaches us to observe a belief—"I must be perfect to be worthy"—and consciously choose to loosen our grip on it. This is not suppression or forced positivity but a dignified relinquishment based on clear seeing. When we practice vairagya, we recognize that holding a belief is a choice, not a necessity. This creates psychological freedom: we can examine what we believe, acknowledge its limitations, and with equanimity, let it dissolve. Vairagya transforms belief change from a desperate struggle into a graceful release.
