Non-attachment that liberates you from clinging to limiting beliefs as though they define your permanent identity.
Vairagya, or detachment and non-attachment, is the complementary principle to abhyasa that allows belief transformation. While abhyasa creates new patterns, vairagya releases your grip on old ones. Many people cling to limiting beliefs—about their intelligence, worthiness, or capability—as though these beliefs constitute their essential self. This clinging prevents change. Vairagya teaches that beliefs are mental constructs, not inherent truths, and that you can observe them without identifying as them. When you practice vairagya, you recognize that a belief about failure doesn't define you; it's simply a thought pattern that has run its course. This detachment creates psychological space where transformation becomes possible. Patanjali teaches that true freedom emerges when we hold all beliefs—even positive ones—lightly, understanding their temporary and conditional nature. Vairagya isn't indifference but rather a wise disidentification that permits beliefs to evolve as your understanding deepens.
