Vairagya translates as 'dispassion' or 'non-attachment.' In Patanjali's framework, vairagya is the complementary practice to abhyasa—while practice builds new patterns, non-attachment releases the grip of old ones. Many beliefs persist not because they're true but because we're emotionally attached to them; they feel safe, familiar, or identity-defining. Vairagya teaches you to examine your beliefs without clinging to them, to recognize their utility without mistaking them for ultimate truth. This doesn't mean becoming detached from life; rather, it's clarity of vision. When you practice vairagya toward your beliefs, you become curious rather than defensive about perspectives that challenge you. You can test new beliefs experimentally without the fear of losing yourself. This psychological flexibility is essential for growth; it allows you to evolve your convictions as your understanding deepens, rather than rigidly defending outdated beliefs.
