Vairagya: Non-Attachment to Beliefs

The practice of releasing emotional investment in beliefs, creating the freedom to examine and evolve them without resistance.

Why It Matters

Vairagya—non-attachment or dispassion—is the complementary partner to abhyasa in Patanjali's path of transformation. While abhyasa builds new belief patterns, vairagya loosens the grip of current beliefs by releasing emotional identification with them. This doesn't mean apathy; rather, it means holding beliefs lightly, as useful tools rather than absolute truths. When you practice vairagya, you stop clinging to being 'right' about what you believe, which opens space for curiosity and evolution. Many beliefs persist not because they're true but because we've invested emotion in them—pride, fear, belonging. Vairagya dissolves this investment, making belief-change feel natural rather than like loss. The practice liberates you from defending old stories and allows genuine discernment about which beliefs truly serve your growth. This balance between practicing new beliefs and releasing attachment to old ones accelerates authentic transformation.
