The practice of releasing attachment to desired emotional states, reducing suffering caused by resistance to present experience.

Why It Matters

Vairagya, or non-attachment, complements abhyasa by addressing the emotional suffering created through craving and aversion. When we become attached to experiencing only positive emotions while rejecting negative ones, we amplify emotional dysregulation. Patanjali teaches that regulation emerges through accepting all emotional states without judgment or desperate clinging. This does not mean emotional numbness; rather, it means experiencing emotions fully while releasing the secondary suffering caused by resistance. When sadness arises, instead of fighting it or demanding happiness, vairagya allows genuine experiencing. This detachment from outcomes paradoxically enables healthier emotional processing. By releasing the exhausting effort to control which emotions arise, energy becomes available for skilled navigation of emotional states. This framework teaches that true regulation comes not from forcing specific emotions but from accepting the full spectrum of human feeling.
