Vairagya is the practice of releasing attachment to limiting beliefs and desires, enabling freedom from inherited and false convictions.
Vairagya, often translated as non-attachment or dispassion, is the complementary practice to abhyasa in Patanjali's system. While abhyasa builds new beliefs, vairagya dissolves the grip of old ones. Many beliefs persist not because they're true but because we're emotionally attached to them—they feel familiar, provide identity, or promise security. Vairagya teaches us to observe these attachments without judgment and gradually release them. This doesn't mean becoming emotionally numb; rather, it means loosening the emotional charge that makes a belief feel unquestionable. By practicing vairagya, we recognize that we are not our beliefs—they are temporary mental constructs we have adopted. This separation creates psychological freedom. We can then choose which beliefs serve our growth and which ones hinder it. Vairagya is essential for belief change because without it, even newly formed beliefs become rigid and limiting.
