Vairagya is the capacity to release attachment to beliefs and mental patterns; it complements abhyasa by enabling us to let go of beliefs that no longer serve us.
Vairagya, often translated as 'non-attachment' or 'dispassion,' is the complementary principle to abhyasa in Patanjali's system. While abhyasa builds new patterns, vairagya allows us to relinquish old ones without the emotional resistance that usually prevents change. Many beliefs persist not because they're true but because we've become attached to them—they define our identity, justify our wounds, or explain our circumstances. Vairagya teaches that we can observe our attachment to beliefs without judgment and gradually release them. This is not forced suppression but a natural letting-go that occurs when we clearly see that a belief no longer serves our highest good. Vairagya is the recognition that we don't have to believe everything we think. By developing the capacity for non-attachment, we can hold beliefs lightly, remain curious rather than defensive about them, and easily update them when evidence or experience suggests something different. This creates psychological flexibility and opens the door to genuine belief transformation.
