Most dysregulated individuals struggle because they resist painful emotions intensely, believing emotions shouldn't exist or must be eliminated immediately. Vairagya teaches that freedom comes through accepting present emotional reality while practicing skillfully for change. In distress tolerance skills, vairagya manifests as radical acceptance—tolerating crisis without demanding immediate emotional relief.
