Vairagya translates as 'non-attachment' or 'dispassion'—the psychological capacity to hold beliefs lightly rather than clutching them as identity anchors. Many beliefs persist not because they're true but because we've invested emotional identity in them; releasing a belief feels like losing ourselves. Patanjali teaches that vairagya doesn't mean indifference but rather freedom from desperate clinging. When applied to belief transformation, vairagya enables us to experiment with new beliefs without the defensive rigidity that protects threatened identity. A person with vairagya can genuinely explore whether 'I am capable' without needing it to be true because they're not threatened by its opposite. This dispassionate exploration paradoxically accelerates belief change by removing the ego-defense mechanisms that resist new evidence. Vairagya creates psychological safety to genuinely test new beliefs. It complements abhyasa: while abhyasa provides the disciplined practice, vairagya provides the emotional freedom to authentically engage with that practice.
