Vairagya, or non-attachment, is the complementary force to abhyasa in Patanjali's system. While practice requires persistent effort, vairagya teaches detachment from fixation on immediate results, which paradoxically accelerates lasting change. Habit formation often fails because people become discouraged when transformation doesn't occur instantly, or they develop anxiety about whether changes will stick. Vairagya dissolves this counterproductive emotional investment. By practicing the habit itself rather than obsessing over the outcome, the mind becomes calm and the nervous system regulated. This reduces the stress response that often triggers relapse into old patterns. Patanjali understood that clinging desperately to outcomes creates resistance within the psyche, whereas practicing with equanimity allows the natural law of cause and effect to operate freely. In contemporary habit psychology, this mirrors the concept of "process orientation" versus "outcome obsession." Vairagya teaches: commit fully to the daily practice, release attachment to when or how change manifests, and trust the process.
