Viveka khyati is the capacity to discern clearly between Self and parts, between authentic and protective identities; this discrimination is central to IFS healing.
Viveka khyati, often called discriminative wisdom or clear discernment, is Patanjali's term for the clarity that distinguishes between Purusha (true consciousness/Self) and Prakriti (the manifested world/mind/parts). This is the insight that liberates: recognizing that you are not your thoughts, emotions, or protective strategies—you are the awareness witnessing them. In Internal Family Systems, viveka khyati is precisely what enables the therapeutic shift: the client's growing ability to say, "That's a part of me, not me. I am the Self observing this part's protective impulse." This discrimination transforms therapeutic work from being trapped in a part's narrative to witnessing it with curiosity and compassion. Patanjali suggests that all suffering arises from confused identity, and all liberation comes from clear distinction. As clients develop viveka khyati through IFS practice, they naturally access Self-leadership. They distinguish between the critic part's harsh voice and their own compassionate awareness. This wisdom isn't abstract philosophy but lived experience—the felt knowing of who you truly are beyond all parts.
