Why It Matters

Viyoga, or separation, describes the process by which something becomes fragmented from its essential nature or original source. In Patanjali's framework, spiritual bondage emerges partly from viyoga—separation from our true nature. Applied to philosophy of history, viyoga illuminates how civilizations become severed from foundational wisdom, how traditions lose coherence, and how the historical record becomes fragmented from lived experience. Empires separate from their founding principles, leading to decline; religious traditions disconnect from their wisdom roots, becoming dogmatic institutions; entire peoples lose connection to their historical narratives, creating identity crises. The Renaissance, for example, represented an attempt to heal viyoga by reconnecting with classical sources after medieval fragmentation. Understanding history through the lens of separation and reconnection explains the rhythm of cultural degeneration and renewal, the recurring human impulse to recover lost knowledge, and why certain historical movements intentionally seek to restore lost connections. This concept transforms how we understand historical causation as partly driven by the pain of disconnection.
