Vritti: Mental Patterns in Attachment

The five mental modifications (vritti) from Yoga Sutras that shape how we form and maintain attachment bonds with others.

Why It Matters

Patanjali's concept of vritti—the five mental modifications of correct knowledge, misperception, imagination, sleep, and memory—directly illuminate attachment patterns. Each vritti creates a filter through which we interpret relationships and respond to intimacy. Misperception (viparyaya) leads to insecure attachment when we misread a partner's intentions. Imagination (vikalpa) generates anxious attachment through catastrophic thinking about abandonment. By recognizing these mental patterns, practitioners can observe their attachment behaviors without judgment, creating space for transformation. The Yoga Sutras teach that mastering the vritti is mastery over the mind itself, and attachment healing begins with witnessing these patterns with clarity and compassion rather than reactivity.
