Vritti: The Mental Modification Trap

Patanjali's concept of mental fluctuations that distort perception and create systematic cognitive biases through habitual thought patterns.

Why It Matters

Vritti, meaning 'whirlpool' or 'modification' in Patanjali's framework, describes the five types of mental fluctuations that color our perception of reality. These automatic thought patterns—including imagination, memory, and false perception—are the root mechanism behind cognitive biases. When the mind operates through vritti, we interpret information through conditioned filters rather than direct observation. Understanding vritti reveals how confirmation bias, availability heuristic, and anchoring bias aren't character flaws but natural outputs of an untrained mind. Patanjali teaches that recognizing these mental modifications is the first step toward neutrality. By becoming aware of how vritti distorts perception, we gain the ability to witness bias without being controlled by it, transforming reactive thinking into conscious choice.
