Why It Matters

In Patanjali's framework, vritti are the modifications or fluctuations of the mind—the mental patterns that arise and dissolve moment by moment. These thought-patterns are the mechanism through which beliefs form and persist. When we repeatedly engage the same mental modification, it becomes encoded as a belief system. Understanding vritti reveals that beliefs are not fixed truths but habitual patterns of mental activity. By observing these fluctuations without judgment, we gain the power to interrupt automatic thought patterns and reshape our belief structures. This psychological insight shows that transformation begins with awareness of how the mind itself generates conviction, allowing us to consciously choose which mental patterns we reinforce and which we release.
