Vritti: Mental Modifications and Internal Parts

The five types of mental fluctuations (vritti) in yoga philosophy map directly to how different parts of ourselves create thought patterns, emotions, and beliefs within the internal system.

Why It Matters

In the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali identifies five vritti or mental modifications: correct knowledge, misconception, imagination, sleep, and memory. Each represents a distinct way the mind processes experience. Within Internal Family Systems, these vritti function as archetypal patterns through which different parts express themselves. A protective part might operate primarily through misconception, while a creative part channels imagination. By recognizing which vritti dominates each internal part, we gain clarity on how that part perceives reality and maintains its role in the system. This framework allows practitioners to distinguish between a part's protective strategy and its fundamental nature, creating space for dialogue and transformation rather than suppression.
