Vritti: Mental Modifications and Internal Parts

Patanjali's concept of mental fluctuations as distinct sub-personalities that can be observed and mastered through witness consciousness.

Why It Matters

In the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali identifies vritti—mental modifications or fluctuations—as the fundamental movements of consciousness that create suffering. This maps directly onto Internal Family Systems, where each part represents a distinct mental modification with its own perspective, emotion, and protective role. Rather than suppressing these vritti, Patanjali's approach mirrors IFS by cultivating witness consciousness (Sakshi) to observe all mental states without identification. When you recognize an anxious part or critical inner voice, you're observing a vritti operating independently. Patanjali teaches that mastery comes through understanding rather than elimination—each modification serves a function. By applying Yoga Sutra wisdom to parts work, practitioners learn to distinguish between the Observer (Self) and the observed (parts), creating space for dialogue and integration. This ancient framework validates that internal multiplicity is natural, and transformation occurs through compassionate observation rather than control.
