Vritti: Mental Thought-Pattern Rewriting

The yoga concept of vritti (mental fluctuations) as the foundation for identifying and rewriting limiting narrative patterns that shape identity.

Why It Matters

Patanjali's vritti—the fluctuations and modifications of the mind—directly parallel the stories we unconsciously repeat about ourselves. In narrative therapy, recognizing these thought-patterns as vritti rather than truth creates immediate distance and choice. When you observe a vritti ("I am broken," "I am unlovable"), you separate from its spell. Patanjali teaches that mastery begins with witnessing these patterns without judgment. Applied to story-rewriting, this means identifying the dominant vritti underlying your life narrative, then consciously authoring an alternative story that better serves your growth. The Yoga Sutras offer a psychological technology for deconstructing the trance of inherited narratives and reconstructing identity through deliberate mental discipline and awareness.
