Witnessing the Attachment Patterns

The foundational practice of observing your attachment behaviors without judgment, as the first step toward understanding and transforming relational patterns.

Why It Matters

Patanjali's Yoga Sutras emphasize Sakshi Bhavana—the witness consciousness that observes mental patterns without identification. In attachment theory, this translates to developing metacognitive awareness of your own attachment style, triggers, and reactive patterns. Rather than being consumed by anxious seeking or avoidant withdrawal, you learn to observe these behaviors as they arise. This witnessing creates psychological distance from automatic responses, enabling choice. When you notice yourself desperately seeking reassurance or pushing away intimacy, you've activated the observer consciousness. This practice doesn't eliminate attachment; it transforms your relationship to it. Through sustained observation, patterns become less compulsive and more consciously navigable, allowing for genuine relational healing and secure attachment development.
