Why It Matters

The opening aphorism of the Yoga Sutras, "Yoga is the cessation of the mind's fluctuations," defines yoga as the quieting of vritti. In Internal Family Systems, this teaching becomes a direct path to experiencing the Self. The Self is the aware presence that exists beneath and beyond all part activity—the witness-consciousness that observes without being identified with any particular voice or perspective. Most people are caught in the constant chorus of their parts: the critic, the caretaker, the protector, the inner child. By practicing the yoga of stilling these fluctuations through meditation, breathwork, or mindfulness, we create moments of pure awareness where the Self emerges. In therapy, this translates to helping clients access moments of witnessing clarity where they can observe their parts without being run by them. These moments of vritti nirodhah are profound experiences of Self-leadership, where the person recognizes their true nature as the space within which all parts move. Regular access to this state accelerates IFS integration and deepens the person's trust in Self-leadership.
