Annihilation of the Preferring Self

The ultimate dissolution of the ego that generates favoritism through mystical union with the divine, making preference meaningless.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia's most radical teaching was about fana—the annihilation of the self in the divine. When the separate self dissolves into the larger reality, the machinery that generates preference collapses. There is no 'I' standing separate, comparing others and choosing favorites. There is only the One. While this ultimate mystical state may seem distant from practical life, Rabia insisted that its orientation matters now. We don't have to achieve complete fana to begin moving in that direction—to begin loosening the boundaries of the ego that insist 'this is mine, this is more valuable, this person belongs to me more than they belong to others.' The cost of identification with the preferring self is ongoing fragmentation and suffering. The invitation is to begin practicing the perspective of fana: to see through the illusion of separation that makes favoritism necessary. This doesn't mean being spiritually aloof; it means becoming so committed to the whole that partiality loses its power. Community then becomes a place where love flows freely because it's not being dammed up by ego's preferences and protections.
