Belonging Before Becoming

The principle that an infant's need for secure belonging and unconditional acceptance must be established before any developmental expectations or shaping are introduced.

Why It Matters

Rabia al-Adawiyya's core teaching was love without condition—not love earned through achievement or obedience but love as the foundation of existence. Belonging Before Becoming applies this to early childhood: the infant's primary need is to experience absolute belonging within the family and community, regardless of any other qualities or capacities. This must be established as the secure base before developmental expectations, behavioral shaping, or achievement-oriented parenting are introduced. Many modern parents inadvertently activate a child's achievement orientation too early, praising specific behaviors, comparing development, or subtly signaling that love is contingent on performance. Rabia's model suggests a different sequence: first establish profound belonging and acceptance, then later—with that foundation secure—introduce guidance and expectations. Infants and toddlers whose primary experience is of being absolutely received and cherished develop a neurological template of safety that allows them to later take risks, learn from failure, and develop resilience. When belonging comes first, becoming is natural and joyful.
