Belonging Before Becoming: Identity Shift

Move identity from "addict struggling to be a parent" to "beloved member of family and recovery community whose addiction is held within larger belonging."

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia's spiritual identity was not built on self-improvement or overcoming limitation but on radical belonging to the Divine. Her flaws were not obstacles to her identity but held within a larger story of love. Many parents in addiction struggle with fractured identity: "I am an addict" becomes the core self, with "I am a parent" as a failing overlay. This framework invites a different sequence: first, claim your belonging—you belong to a family, to a community, to a larger story of human struggle and redemption. Within that belonging, your addiction is real but not total. You are the parent your child is learning from; you are the community member others depend on; you are the beloved in a larger web of relationship. This identity shift, which Rabia modeled through her devotional life, is not denial but reintegration. It happens not through willpower but through consistent actions that reinforce belonging: showing up for your child, speaking truth in community, practicing devotion. Over time, the addict identity no longer occupies the center; it becomes one element within a larger, more coherent self.
