Belonging as Remembrance

A spiritual practice where belonging is activated through conscious remembrance of your connection to the Divine, witnessed and supported by community.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia taught that the spiritual path is remembrance—dhikr—returning awareness to the beloved repeatedly. Community's role is supporting each member's remembrance of what truly matters. Belonging as Remembrance reframes community function: instead of groups that enforce conformity or provide identity, belonging means gathering with others dedicated to remembering together what's real and sacred. This has radical implications for distinguishing genuine belonging from fitting in. In fitting-in groups, you're oriented toward external expectations and group definitions of success. In remembrance communities, everyone supports everyone else in returning to their deepest truth. The group becomes a container for remembering what you tend to forget under social pressure. The practice involves identifying or creating small gatherings—spiritual circles, study groups, friendship circles—explicitly oriented toward remembering what matters most. Meet regularly and consciously support each other in returning to truth, love, and purpose. Notice how belonging feels different when the group's function is remembering together versus performing together. This distinction transforms relationships from conditional belonging into eternal belonging rooted in what truly lasts.
