Belonging Without Belonging

Rabia's famous teaching—loving God with such totality that she had no space for loving or fearing anything else—paradoxically created profound community connection. She wasn't withdrawn; she was deeply engaged with others through pure devotion. This paradox offers wisdom for assimilation dilemmas: you can be fully devoted to ancestral tradition while being fully present in contemporary society. These aren't competing loyalties that require choosing. Just as Rabia's singular devotion didn't diminish her capacity for community, singular commitment to core cultural values doesn't prevent authentic engagement with surrounding society. The key is clarity about what deserves total devotion (core values, spiritual truths, family bonds) and what deserves contextual engagement (social practices, language of daily commerce, contemporary institutions). When we're clear about where our deepest belonging lies, we can move flexibly in other domains without fragmentation.
