Belonging Without Condition

Creating spaces where community members feel they belong intrinsically, not because they serve a cause, deserve membership, or meet standards.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia's spiritual path emphasized that divine love accepts all beings as they are. Applied to organizing, this means building communities where belonging is unconditional—where a person's worth isn't measured by their usefulness to the cause. Many organizing efforts inadvertently create hierarchies: committed members versus casual participants, those with "correct" politics versus those still learning. This fractures belonging. Instead, Rabia's teaching suggests that every community member has inherent value. Someone attending their first meeting deserves the same dignity as a five-year veteran. Someone with contradictory views or limited time deserves genuine welcome. This doesn't eliminate accountability or shared values; rather, it separates judgment of ideas from judgment of persons. When people experience unconditional belonging, they develop stronger emotional investment in collective wellbeing. They're less likely to leave when personal circumstances change. They feel safe enough to voice doubts and grow. This transforms community from a vehicle for change into a genuine human home.
