The Beloved's Absence and Presence: Holding Paradox

Rabia's practice of loving God in absence and presence simultaneously, enabling found families to sustain commitment despite inevitable separations and losses.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia famously carried fire and water through Baghdad's streets, declaring she would burn Paradise and douse Hell's flames: love of God must exist independent of reward or punishment, presence or absence. This paradoxical love directly addresses found family sustainability, as diaspora members inevitably experience separations: members return to origin countries, relocate for work, die, or drift away. Traditional kinship claims permanence through biology; found families must consciously practice commitment that survives separation. Rabia's framework allows this: love and belonging are not contingent on physical presence. Found families can maintain spiritual connection with members who have geographically dispersed, creating rituals and practices that honor ongoing kinship across distance. This involves: regular communication that prioritizes emotional and spiritual connection over logistics, ceremonies that include absent members, storytelling that keeps departed members present in collective memory, and practices of collective grief when separations are permanent. Holding both absence and presence also means found families can sustain through loss without dissolution: the death or departure of a member is genuinely mourned while the family's fundamental structure and other bonds remain intact. This differs from biological families where one member's death is unambiguous; found families must consciously decide that loss of a member doesn't invalidate the family itself. Rabia's paradoxical love teaches that commitment to the found family as collective can transcend individual relationships, creating resilience that supports both profound intimacy and realistic acceptance of impermanence.
