Beloved-Witnessing: The Parent as Devoted Observer

A parental stance of deep witnessing and appreciation for who the teen is becoming, rather than who the parent wants them to be.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Central to Rabia's spirituality was witnessing—being present to the Beloved with awe and attention. This concept translates powerfully into parenting the adolescent. Rather than the traditional parental role of shaping, correcting, or directing, the devoted parent becomes a witness to the teen's unfolding identity. This means noticing and naming what the parent sees: your teen's emerging values, their creativity, their struggles, their humor. It means asking genuine questions and listening to answers without immediately judging or problem-solving. Witnessing creates a mirror in which the teen sees themselves reflected, which is essential for identity formation. Adolescents often feel unseen or misunderstood by parents; devoted witnessing addresses this directly. The parent who says 'I notice you care deeply about justice' or 'I see how hard you're working to figure this out' gives the teen language for their own becoming. This practice doesn't require approval of every choice but rather honest, loving attention to who the teen is.
