Devotion Without Attachment

The paradoxical practice of caring deeply without needing particular outcomes, enabling equitable presence unburdened by personal investment in who succeeds.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia's most radical teaching was loving God without seeking anything in return—a total devotion that paradoxically freed her from desperate need. This concept directly confronts a root of favoritism: our attachment to particular outcomes and people. We often favor those we believe will deliver what we want—success, status, comfort, validation. Devotion without attachment means caring about someone's wellbeing without needing them to reciprocate, advance us, or fulfill our expectations. This transforms how we show up. A teacher practicing devotion without attachment can genuinely want each student to flourish, not just those who make them look good. A parent can love each child's actual self, not the version they imagined. A leader can develop people's capacities regardless of whether they'll stay in the organization. This isn't indifference; it's the deepest possible care precisely because it asks nothing. Rabia modeled this through her entire life: serving those who couldn't serve her, teaching those outside power, giving without counting. When we practice devotion without attachment, favoritism loses its grip—we're no longer unconsciously calculating who deserves our best.
