Devotion Without Attachment to Outcome

Rabia's famous prayer to love God without reward or fear reveals belonging freed from the anxiety of approval-seeking.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia's prayer—"I love You with two loves, a love from gratitude and a love from longing"—expresses devotion completely untethered from reward or punishment. This concept cuts to the heart of belonging versus fitting in: fitting in is fundamentally attached to outcomes (acceptance, status, inclusion), while true belonging releases that attachment. When you stop needing the community to validate your worth, paradoxically, you belong more fully. This is because desperation to fit in distorts your authentic self, whereas devotion without attachment to outcome allows your real self to show. In Rabia's tradition, you love and serve not because you expect love and service in return, but because your nature is to love. Applied to community belonging: you participate and contribute from your authentic nature, not from fear of rejection. This transforms the entire dynamic. Relationships become gifts rather than transactions. When you release the anxiety of being accepted, you finally stop performing the self you think others want and start inhabiting the self you actually are.
