Divine Love as Organizing Principle

Rabia al-Adawiyya taught that pure love transcends fear and reward, flowing naturally from the heart toward the Divine. In community organizing, this translates to loving your neighbors and co-organizers without expectation of reciprocal benefit or institutional recognition. This concept challenges transactional approaches to coalition-building and asks organizers to examine their deepest motivations. When love becomes the organizing principle rather than ideology alone, relationships deepen and communities develop resilience beyond campaign cycles. This Sufi approach suggests that sustainable organizing emerges from genuine care for collective flourishing, creating bonds that persist through setbacks and celebrate shared humanity rather than merely shared interests.
