Divine Love Without Preference

The practice of loving all beings equally as expressions of the Divine, transcending the human tendency to favor some over others.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia al-Adawiyya taught that true love of God requires releasing attachment to outcomes and preferences. In her tradition, favoritism emerges when we love conditionally—favoring those who benefit us, share our beliefs, or belong to our group. Divine love, by contrast, flows without discrimination because it recognizes God's presence in all creation. When we practice this principle in relationships and communities, favoritism loses its grip. We stop elevating some people as worthy of kindness while diminishing others. The cost of unchecked favoritism is spiritual poverty: we become trapped in small circles of self-interest. Rabia's radical equality dissolves the false hierarchies that favoritism creates, revealing how preference blinds us to the sacred worth present in every person we encounter.
