Fana: Dissolving the Self of Preference

The mystical dissolution of ego that removes the personal preferences underlying favoritism and the illusion of separate worth.

Why It Matters

Fana, the Sufi concept of annihilation of self in union with the divine, directly addresses the root of favoritism: the ego that ranks and prefers. Rabia pursued fana as the path to pure love, where the separate self with its preferences, tribal loyalties, and calculated affinities dissolves into divine unity. Favoritism thrives in the unregenerate ego—the part that asks 'what do I gain?' and 'who am I closer to?' When the self dissolves into something greater, these questions lose their urgency. The cost of favoritism from this perspective is existential: we remain trapped in the illusion of separate selfhood, unable to experience the transcendent unity that dissolves all hierarchy. In community, fana means viewing all members not as competitors for our affection but as expressions of a single reality. This mystical annihilation paradoxically creates the deepest belonging because we recognize ourselves in all others equally.
