The Favor Economy and Its Debt

An examination of how favoritism creates hidden economies of obligation and indebtedness that bind people through implicit hierarchy rather than genuine connection.

Why It Matters

Every system of favoritism creates an underground economy where some people accumulate social credit while others accumulate debt. The favored become obligated to maintain their status through loyalty and performance; the overlooked bear the invisible weight of knowing they matter less. Rabia's spiritual teaching rejected this transactional framework entirely, insisting that genuine community and connection cannot exist where hidden accounts are being kept. In families, this shows up as golden children and scapegoats; in organizations, as inner circles and outsiders; in movements, as the core trusted few and the expendable many. The relational cost is severe: bonds become conditional, trust becomes strategic, and vulnerability becomes dangerous. No one can truly belong in a favor economy because belonging is always contingent on performance and position. Rabia taught unconditional love precisely because she understood that only when the ledger is burned—when we release the keeping of score—can authentic human connection emerge. The path forward requires conscious dismantling of these hidden debt structures and replacement with transparent, equal regard.
