The Gift Economy of Presence

An economic and relational framework where the primary currency is undivided attention and genuine presence with others.

Why It Matters

Unlike transactional exchange—where value is measured and returned—Rabia's approach to relationships was rooted in gift logic. She gave her presence, prayers, and witness without expectation of proportional return. This gift economy of presence offers a radical alternative to the exchange-based communities that exhaust their members. In this framework, the primary wealth is availability—the willingness to truly meet another person, to listen fully, to remember details of their lives, to show up consistently. Gift economy operates on different principles: gifts create bonds rather than debts, they circulate rather than accumulate, and their value is immeasurable rather than quantifiable. Modern communities struggle when they operate on pure exchange logic, where people track fairness and calibrate investment. By contrast, communities that practice gift economy—where members give time, attention, and care expecting nothing specific in return—develop a texture of genuine belonging. The paradox is that such communities often become more resilient because people are less likely to withdraw when their calculated exchanges feel unequal. The joy comes from circulation itself, not from tit-for-tat settlement.
