The Heart Without Preference

Rabia al-Adawiyya taught that pure love asks nothing in return and plays no favorites between divine reward and punishment. When we examine our communities and relationships through Rabia's lens of unconditional devotion, we see how favoritism costs us authenticity and fractures belonging. The practice asks: whom do we exclude because they offer nothing? Whose potential do we overlook because they cannot advance our interests? By cultivating the heart without preference, we begin recognizing how favoritism serves ego, not love, and how it deteriorates the very community bonds we claim to cherish.
