Intercession Across the Veil

The practice of asking ancestors to advocate, guide, or intervene on our behalf, recognizing relationship transcends physical death.

Why It Matters

In Islamic mysticism, Rabia and other saints are venerated as intercessors—beings who can bridge the human and divine realms. Across traditions, ancestors hold liminal positions: they have passed through death's threshold yet retain connection to the living. Intercession assumes this relationship continues. Catholics pray through saint-ancestors for specific needs; Chinese practice includes asking ancestors for guidance through divination; many African traditions consult ancestors for protection and wisdom. This concept acknowledges that death changes the nature of relationship but doesn't end it. Ancestors who knew us, loved us, and invested in our wellbeing remain advocates for us. Whether understood literally—as souls with agency—or psychologically—as internalized wisdom—intercession practices strengthen our sense of being supported. We learn to ask for help not just from living mentors but from the accumulated wisdom of our lineage. This transforms ancestors from passive memory into active presences we can turn to in decision-making, crisis, and spiritual seeking.
