Intergenerational Wisdom Exchange

A structured practice of creating opportunities for elders and young people to learn from each other in organizing work.

Why It Matters

Rabia honored the wisdom of those who came before while remaining open to learning from all people. Intergenerational Wisdom Exchange creates deliberate structures for this mutual learning in organizing spaces. Elders bring historical memory—they've seen cycles of struggle and victory, know what movements have tried before, understand how injustices are connected across decades. Young people bring fresh energy, technological fluency, and freedom from old patterns that may no longer serve. Rather than siloing generations, Intergenerational Wisdom Exchange pairs them in mentorships, creates mixed-age working groups, and designs meetings where both voices shape strategy. This might look like a young organizer teaching an elder how to use social media while that elder shares stories of organizing victories from fifty years ago. It means creating space where young people question whether old strategies still work while honoring the courage it took to develop them. It means elders making space for young people to try new approaches and make mistakes. When intergenerational exchange is authentic, communities develop deeper roots and broader imagination. Young people feel connected to legacy and lineage. Elders feel their wisdom valued. The movement becomes less prone to repeating past mistakes or reinventing wheels, while remaining creative and adaptive.
