The Lantern of Belonging

A practice of creating shared sacred space within displacement, where chosen family gathers as witnesses to each other's spiritual and emotional journeys.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia spoke of drawing near to God through intimate, honest presence—the same presence diaspora communities extend to one another across scattered geographies. The Lantern of Belonging names this: intentional gatherings where found family becomes sacred witness. These are spaces—physical or virtual—where migration stories, grief, joy, and spiritual seeking are held without judgment. Unlike institutional belonging (institutions the migrant may not access), this practice is sovereign: created by and for the community itself. Inspired by Rabia's teaching that devotion requires presence, this framework transforms ordinary moments—meals, conversations, rituals—into spiritual practice. For diaspora members, these lantern-spaces restore agency: you belong not because an institution grants it, but because your chosen family recognizes your full humanity. The practice acknowledges that displacement dims familiar lights; community creates new illumination.
