Favoritism becomes most entrenched when institutionalized in legacy: we favor our children with inheritance, education, connections; our culture favors its own traditions; institutions favor the already-privileged. Rabia, born into privilege, explicitly rejected dynastic favoritism. She left no dynasty, accumulated no wealth to pass to heirs, created no system favoring her bloodline. Instead, she modeled what equitable legacy might look like: teachings offered freely to all, wisdom that multiplied through sharing rather than hoarding, a spiritual family organized around principle rather than bloodline. The cost of contaminated legacy is profound: those born into advantage inherit guilt and entitlement; those born outside it inherit nothing but disadvantage. Entire systems calcify around the favored, making structural change nearly impossible. Rabia's alternative—conscious, deliberate democratization of what we pass forward—is radical. It asks: what wisdom or resources do I hold that belong to the whole rather than my bloodline? How can my gifts serve all who come after, not just those I birth? This doesn't require asceticism (though Rabia chose it) but intentionality. We can ask hard questions about our inheritances: who benefits from our accumulated advantage? What would it look like to consciously redistribute, to mentor beyond family, to champion institutions that serve the many rather than the few?
