The Longing-Question: What Does the Teen Truly Seek?

A contemplative practice of inquiring beneath adolescent behavior—beyond the surface rebellion, withdrawal, or conformity—to understand the deeper seeking at work.

Why It Matters

Rabia's spiritual life was characterized by fervent longing—she asked directly, vulnerably, what she truly sought and from whom. This practice of honest questioning can illuminate the parent's understanding of their adolescent. When a teen is withdrawn, hostile, risk-taking, or anxious, the surface behavior is rarely the complete story. Beneath the behavior lies a question, a longing, a fear, or a search for meaning. A parent practicing Rabia's contemplative stance might pause and ask, "What is my teen really seeking? What void are they trying to fill? What truth are they trying to live?" A teen who pushes boundaries is asking, "Am I strong and capable?" A teen who withdraws might be asking, "Is it safe to be myself?" A teen who pursues popularity might be asking, "Do I belong?" By turning toward the longing beneath the behavior, parents move from simple reactions (punishment, lectures, worry) to understanding and wisdom. This doesn't excuse harmful behavior, but it reframes the parent's response: instead of solely addressing the behavior, the parent can address the underlying need. A parent might say, "I notice you're seeking connection; let's find healthier ways," or "You're testing your independence—I can support that and also keep you safe." This practice demands that parents themselves cultivate awareness and patience, but it transforms the relationship from adversarial to collaborative.
