Recognizing when you're seeking connection from wholeness versus seeking it to fill absence—a critical discernment for genuine belonging.
Rabia described her love for God as longing rather than need. Need is deficit-driven: you belong to a group to fix what's broken in you. Longing is abundance-driven: you connect from fullness, seeking resonance rather than rescue. This distinction transforms how you evaluate whether a community offers belonging or merely the illusion of it. When joining a group from need—for identity, status, safety, or purpose—you're inherently vulnerable to compromising yourself; the group becomes your life support. Longing, conversely, allows discernment. You can ask honestly: "Does this community amplify who I am, or does it require me to diminish?" Rabia's longing for the Divine included her longing for community with other seekers, but the latter never became desperate or conditional. Practically, this means examining your motivation before deepening involvement: Are you here because this mirrors your values, or because you're fleeing an internal void? Belonging rooted in longing remains responsive and authentic; belonging rooted in need becomes enmeshed and performative. The distinction determines freedom within connection.
